These are approximate values, not hard limits. The playing time that fits on one side depends on the audio itself (dynamics, bass content, stereo width), so the same length can be fine for one album and a compromise for another.

* '''Up to about 20 minutes per side''' is ideal. The side can be cut at a full recording level without compromises.
* '''Over 20 minutes per side''' is possible, but it is a compromise: lower volume (recording level), less dynamics and reduced bass. The longer the side, the bigger the compromise.

Longer sides push the grooves closer to the label, where reduced groove speed increases [[Inner groove distortion|inner groove distortion]]. Keeping within these times helps preserve sound fidelity.

How long can a side of a 12" record at 331/3 RPM be?

  • Up to about 20 minutes per side is ideal. The side can be cut at a full recording level without compromises.
  • Over 20 minutes per side is possible, but it is a compromise: lower volume (recording level), less dynamics and reduced bass. The longer the side, the bigger the compromise.
  • Very long sides can be cut up to almost 30 minutes per side, but only with DMM (most of our records are cut with DMM anyway), and such a record has significant limitations in volume, dynamics and bass. If your side is much longer than 20 minutes, please consult us before mastering.

Longer sides push the grooves closer to the label, where reduced groove speed increases inner groove distortion. Keeping within these times helps preserve sound fidelity.
